Oral Minoxidil Tablets for Hair Loss: Dose, Results and Side Effects (2026)

• • 12 min read

Oral minoxidil is the tablet form of minoxidil, a blood pressure medicine that doctors prescribe off-label at low doses for hair loss. Published reviews describe it as working about as well as the topical solution, with different side effects, and it is a prescription medicine [9].

The figures below come from published studies, an international specialists’ consensus and the official US label, all listed at the end. The decision to take the tablet, and the dose, belong to the doctor who examines you.

What Is Oral Minoxidil?

Minoxidil was originally developed to treat high blood pressure [5]. The US label approves the tablet only for severe hypertension and says use “to promote hair growth is not an approved indication” [8]. Prescribing it for hair loss is therefore off-label, a practice that 43 hair specialists from 12 countries addressed in a 2025 consensus statement [4].

Its effect on hair is attributed mainly to opening potassium channels in the cells at the base of the follicle, with several other pathways involved [5].

Key points:

  • A blood pressure tablet used off-label, at low doses, for hair loss. It needs a prescription.
  • Extra hair on the face and body is the side effect reported most often. Fluid around the heart is rare at hair loss doses but serious, and a doctor assesses and monitors for it.
  • The consensus starting dose for women is half the men’s. Do not take it while pregnant or breastfeeding. If you are planning a pregnancy, tell the doctor before starting.
  • In a trial in men, a 5 mg tablet was not shown to be better than 5% topical minoxidil.

Does Oral Minoxidil Work for Hair Loss?

Published reviews describe it as an effective alternative for people who struggle with the topical form. A 2021 review of 17 studies with 634 patients concluded that oral minoxidil was “an effective and well-tolerated treatment alternative for healthy patients having difficulty with topical formulations”, and said larger randomised studies were needed [1].

A 2026 review describes it as working about as well as topical minoxidil, with people sticking to it better and fewer side effects from applying a solution [5]. Both that review and the consensus statement say long-term data is still lacking [4] [5].

In women, the evidence is thinner. A 24-week trial of a 1 mg tablet against 5% solution found a trend in favour of the tablet but no statistically significant advantage [6]. One review states that patients are expected to see results within the first 3 to 4 months [6].

Oral Minoxidil vs Topical Minoxidil

A randomised trial in men compared the two directly. Ninety men aged 18 to 55 with hair loss that included the crown (Norwood 3V, 4V or 5V) took either a 5 mg tablet daily or applied 5% solution twice daily for 24 weeks, and 68 completed the study [2].

Oral minoxidil 5 mg daily Topical minoxidil 5% twice daily
Hair density after 24 weeks No significant difference between the groups, on the frontal scalp or the crown
Photographic analysis The tablet was rated better on the crown, but not on the frontal scalp
Extra body or facial hair 22 of 45 (49%) 11 of 45 (25%)
Headache 6 of 45 (14%) 1 of 45 (2%)
Scalp eczema 1 of 45 (2%) 7 of 45 (16%)
Scalp itching 1 of 45 (2%) 5 of 45 (11%)
Shedding 4 of 45 (9%) 7 of 45 (16%)

Source for the table: [2]. Changes in heart rate and blood pressure did not differ between the groups. The authors note that the trial was small, ran at one centre and lost a number of men to follow-up [2].

The authors concluded that the tablet “did not demonstrate superiority” over the solution [2]. The tablet is easier to take. Reviews note that many people struggle with applying a solution twice a day, the texture it leaves in the hair, and scalp irritation [1].

Oral Minoxidil Dose for Hair Loss

There is no approved hair loss dose, because hair loss is not an approved use of the tablet [8]. Instead, the international consensus, as summarised in a 2026 review, supports a starting dose of 2.5 mg a day for men (range 1.25 to 5 mg) and 1.25 mg a day for women (range 0.625 to 5 mg), with lower doses for adolescents and caution in kidney or liver impairment [5].

For women, the consensus starting dose is half the men’s. The 5 mg used in the men’s trial is the top of the range.

The label gives the usual blood pressure range as 10 to 40 mg a day [8]. Hair loss doses are a fraction of that, hence the name low-dose oral minoxidil.

Do not start, split or raise a dose on your own. Efficacy appears to rise with the dose, and so do the common side effects [6]. The consensus includes a baseline evaluation and monitoring before and during treatment [4].

Oral Minoxidil Side Effects

A multicentre retrospective study looked at 1,404 patients (943 women and 461 men) treated with low-dose oral minoxidil for at least three months [3]. It had no control group, so treat its percentages as a guide.

Side effect How often Source
Extra hair on the face or body (hypertrichosis) 15.1% in the safety study. 24% in a 2026 review. 49% of men on 5 mg in the trial [3] [5] [2]
Temporary shedding 16 to 22% in a review. 9% of men in the trial, in the first two months [5] [2]
Lightheadedness 1.7% [3]
Fluid retention 1.3%. Swelling around the eyes 0.3% [3]
Fast heartbeat 0.9% [3]
Headache 0.4% in the safety study. 14% of men on 5 mg in the trial [3] [2]
Fluid around the heart (pericardial effusion) Rare at hair loss doses. About 3% at blood pressure doses [5] [8]
Stopped treatment because of side effects 1.7% [3]

The figures differ between studies. The trial used 5 mg, the top of the consensus range, and the safety study was retrospective [2] [3]. No life-threatening side effects were recorded in the safety study [3].

Extra hair led 0.5% of patients in the safety study to stop [3], and women are more prone to it than men [6]. The label, written for blood pressure doses, says it appears within 3 to 6 weeks, usually first on the temples and between the eyebrows, and can take 1 to 6 months to clear after stopping [8]. One review says the prescriber can lower the dose until it settles [6].

A serious side effect to know about is fluid around the heart (pericardial effusion). At blood pressure doses, the label reports it, “occasionally with tamponade”, in about 3% of treated patients not on dialysis, and temporary swelling in 7% [8]. At hair loss doses, a review describes it as rare [5]. A small ultrasound study scanned 100 patients and found small effusions without symptoms about as often in people not taking the tablet (6%) as in those taking it (5.8%) [7].

Call your doctor immediately if you are on the tablet and notice a much faster pulse, rapid weight gain, swelling of the face, hands or ankles, difficulty breathing, chest pain, dizziness or fainting. These are the warning signals in the label [8].

Who Should Not Take Oral Minoxidil

Do not take it while pregnant or breastfeeding. If you are planning a pregnancy, tell the doctor before starting. A review says the tablet is not recommended in pregnancy or breastfeeding [6], the label reports excess hair growth in newborns exposed during pregnancy [8], and the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery lists the period before pregnancy as a precaution [12].

Published reviews and the label also name these conditions:

  • Pericardial disease [5]
  • Uncontrolled high blood pressure [5]
  • Heart rhythm disorders or kidney disease [6]
  • Pheochromocytoma, a rare adrenal gland tumour [8]

Tell the prescribing doctor about any heart condition and every medicine you take. One review advises a cardiologist’s opinion first for anyone with a history of heart disorders [6]. Caution is advised in kidney or liver impairment, and lower doses are recommended for adolescents [5].

Minoxidil Tablets in India: Prescription, Brands and Price

Do not buy minoxidil tablets without a prescription. A prescription written for someone else is not a prescription for you. A seller who skips the prescription skips the baseline evaluation and the exclusions above too.

One large Indian pharmacy lists a 1.25 mg minoxidil tablet as a prescription medicine [9]. Under the US label, tablets come in 2.5 mg and 10 mg strengths [8]. Whether a minoxidil 2.5 mg tablet or another strength suits you is the prescriber’s decision, not the buyer’s.

Another pharmacy site lists Lonitab, from Intas Pharmaceuticals, among the tablet brands, at ₹187 to ₹703 across four variants when we checked on 13 October 2026 [10]. Prices vary by seller.

We could not confirm any Indian approval of the tablet specifically for hair loss, so treat its use for hair as off-label here too.

What Oral Minoxidil Will Not Do

It was not shown to beat the topical form. In the trial in men, the 5 mg tablet was not superior to 5% solution [2]. Whether to switch is a decision for your doctor.

Minoxidil works mainly on potassium channels in the follicle [5]. Our guide to DHT blockers covers the medicines that act on DHT.

The benefit may fade if you stop. With the topical solution, hair normally goes back to how it looked before treatment within three or four months of stopping [11]. We found no equivalent figure for the tablet. One review advises stopping if nothing has improved after 6 to 8 months [6].

We found no evidence that it restores a bare scalp. The trial counted changes in hair density in men at Norwood 3V to 5V [2].

You need a diagnosis first. The consensus starts with a baseline evaluation [4]. Our minoxidil guide covers the topical form.

Oral Minoxidil or a Hair Transplant?

A hair transplant moves healthy follicles from the back and sides of the scalp into bare areas. Which approach suits you depends on your assessment.

The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery states, without citing a study, that oral minoxidil can be combined with a hair transplant [12]. Hair that was not transplanted can continue to thin over time.

For men who are unsure of their stage, the baldness calculator and the Norwood scale page are a starting point.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does oral minoxidil really work for hair loss?

A 2021 review of 17 studies with 634 patients called it an effective and well-tolerated alternative for healthy patients who struggle with the topical form, and asked for larger randomised trials [1]. Long-term data is still limited [4].

Is it safe to take minoxidil tablets?

It is a prescription blood pressure medicine, and its label warns of fluid around the heart at blood pressure doses [8]. Its use for hair is off-label and needs a doctor’s assessment and monitoring [4]. In a retrospective study of 1,404 patients on low doses, with no control group, 1.7% stopped because of side effects and no life-threatening effects were recorded [3]. It is unsuitable for some people, including those with pericardial disease, uncontrolled blood pressure or a pregnancy [5].

Is oral minoxidil better than topical minoxidil?

Not in a trial that compared them in men. A 5 mg tablet daily was not superior to 5% solution twice daily after 24 weeks. Photographs favoured the tablet on the crown but not on the frontal scalp [2].

Is oral minoxidil a DHT blocker?

No. Its effect on hair is attributed mainly to opening potassium channels in the follicle [5]. Finasteride, a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor, is a medicine that reduces DHT [13].

What is the usual oral minoxidil dose for hair loss?

There is no approved dose for hair loss [8]. The international specialists’ consensus, as summarised in a 2026 review, supports starting at 2.5 mg a day for men and 1.25 mg a day for women, within ranges that go up to 5 mg [5]. Your doctor sets the dose. Do not start or change it yourself.

Does oral minoxidil cause hair shedding?

It can. A 2026 review reports temporary shedding in 16 to 22% of patients [5], and in the men’s trial it occurred in the first two months of treatment [2].

Can women take oral minoxidil?

Do not take it while pregnant or breastfeeding. If you are planning a pregnancy, tell the doctor before starting. A review says it is not recommended in pregnancy or breastfeeding [6]. The consensus starting dose for women is 1.25 mg a day, half the men’s [5], and women are more prone to extra facial and body hair [6]. In one trial in women, a 1 mg tablet showed no statistically significant advantage over 5% solution [6].
