What Is DHI Hair Transplant?

Direct Hair Implantation (DHI) is an advanced hair transplant implantation technique that uses a specialised tool called the Choi Implanter Pen to place hair follicles directly into the recipient area without creating separate incisions (channels) beforehand.

In standard FUE, the procedure has three distinct steps: extraction, channel creation (making tiny slits in the recipient area), and then implantation (placing grafts into those channels). DHI combines the last two steps into one. The doctor loads a graft into the Choi pen, which creates the channel and places the graft simultaneously.

This reduces the time grafts spend outside the body, minimises trauma to the recipient scalp, and gives the doctor precise control over the angle and depth of each implanted follicle.

Important clarification: DHI is not a different technique from FUE. It is an implantation method that works alongside FUE extraction. When someone says “FUE vs DHI,” they are comparing different phases of the same procedure. FUE is how grafts are taken out. DHI is how grafts are put in.

Step 1: Consultation and Hairline Design

Step 2: Donor Extraction (Using UFME)

The extraction process is identical whether you call the procedure “FUE” or “DHI” because extraction always uses the FUE principle. The difference lies entirely in how the grafts are implanted.

Step 3: Graft Sorting and Loading

Extracted grafts are sorted by hair count (singles, doubles, triples) and immediately loaded into Choi implanter pens by the surgical team.
